I think that this is a very nice collection of photos. I especially like the first one with Caulley. The contrast works very nicely in this image. I really like how the Maryland flag is positioned. I also think there is some mystery, as the subject is not smiling. The second image with Sascha looks quite natural and catches a moment. My suggestion here would be to pick a more meaningful background or include an item that is more significant in telling us something about this person. What you did with the portrait without a person is clever, but I do not know if it works for this assignment. Therefore, I would try to use an interior such as a room with items that say something about them. I like the focus of the lens that you chose in your last two images but I would say that these two slightly too basic. Perhaps try using reflections elsewhere to get something unusual or maybe try to be more aggressive with the editing. But overall, I think these are good.
I think you have a decent set of portrait photos. Your second photo is your most successful in my opinion. I would also have to agree with Emil in that choosing a better setting or background would benefit your portrait photos a lot. I also believe you could benefit from looking into ways to successfully take a portrait of an object as that one is your least successful.
Hi Pat. You need to give much more thought to light, environment and body language. While these are portraits, they are only so because a person is represented in each image. The images themselves are much too casual and don't express a feeling or emotion. Nor do they give us any great insight as to who these individual are. I would encourage you to replace all of these and give a lot more emphasis on the environment, body language and a dynamic composition. If you look at all these images you have taken them at your height while standing up. You need to be much more physical with the process. Good Luck!
