Abstraction Work in Progress (Zoë)

  1. Hi Zoe! I’ll start by saying that I’m a big fan of the light and dark contrast in your first photo! I love how the tree is so dark that it becomes a silhouette. I’m not entirely sure if you can do this in Lightroom, but there’s a bit of a bright glare going on that I might experiment with toning down, but I’m not sure if this is possible. I’m also a big fan of your last photo with the sky reflecting in the puddle. I might crop it closer so there’s less pavement on the left side of the shot. Actually, I might crop it way tighter toward the current middle and then have each different material take up a third of the shot kind of like neapolitan ice cream. As for the second photo, I think it’s interesting just based on the design of the grate, but I can’t help but feel like there’s some way to make it more interesting by getting closer or experimenting with the saturation to make it pop? Just some thoughts, but these are a solid first pass!

  2. I really like your set of photos here! I really liked your fourth photo of the reflection in a window. I also really liked your last photo as well. It kind of looks like a window into another dimension or something. My suggestion would be for the first photo, I like the tree, the light kind of engulfs the branches in the back and I think that would be cool to have more definition on those. Another suggestion would be for your second photo, I would crop the image and play with the shadows to maybe make a dramatic contrast between each of the slats of the grate.

  3. Hi Zoe. We kind of spoke about your work after class. But I think in general I would encourage you to keep exploring your surroundings for more compelling images. You are looking for the right subject, but you need to spend more time formalizing the image in the viewfinder. Also think in layers as most of your images are a flat and single surface and you want there to be depth to your work. Pay particular attention to the edges of your frame, the composition and balance of the subject. And Light, you need a stronger sense of light in your works. Strong highlights and dark shadows. Good Luck!
