Skylar: Photographic Limitations
Something Out of Nothing
Out of all the sections I found the 'something out of nothing' photos to be the hardest. One reason I found this was because of the excessive snow in my area which really challenged me with exposure levels and also the fact that many benches were under about 20 inches of snow. I took this challenge to a nearby town where I attempted to show the perspective of each side of the bench.

It was my brother and his girlfriend who decided they wanted to bring me to Bethlehem, a town not too far away with a lot of artistic sculptures throughout town. For this picture, he placed me very close to the sculpture in the snow. It was challenging to shoot it from different angles because of the fact that I was so close but I think that the light caught really interestingly in the glassworks.
The Human Eye
The first subject of my "human eye" photos was the sculpture of the HEAR NO EVIL monkey. I wanted to use this as my subject because the way the colors in the glass were so vivid. I thought it was really interesting and the sculpture was super beautiful so I wanted to capture it to the best of my ability.
The second thing I used for the "human eye" section was this outdoor public piano in Bethlehem. I always have loved the idea of the outdoor piano and I think this one is so interesting looking. The keys were a bit frozen, keys were broken and worn down. Despite that, the colorful piano is something that I find to be a wonderful depiction of the way that music can bring the community together.
Tick Tock
One of the super cool things that my 10-minute walk brought me to was the Crayola factory which features walkways that are so creative and cute. I decided to take photos of the walkways because I thought that the black and white crayons were interesting to see.
Being in a super artistic town to take these photos made it really fun for me. On the other side of town, I found these really fun pieces of art. They were worn and a bit dirty and yet each one still seems really clear to me. I found these to be really cool and interesting to look at.

Let me start by saying I think the crayon crosswalk is so cute! As for the photos, if I had to pick a favorite, I really enjoy the chipped paint “D” strictly because of the bright orange in contrast to the beige. It’s very eye catching. I also really enjoy the gate “S” for the same exercise because the tone is so dark and a little ominous, which I also get from the angle. If I were to change anything about these photographs, I might try to align some of them so they are more upright. The final photograph, for example, would be more striking if the photograph were of the titles directly head on and aligned. I also wish the first bench image was cropped a little tighter on the left, but that’s just nit-picky. I’m jealous of all the stuff in your town!
ReplyDeleteI really liked the photos of the statute for exercise number 3. I liked how you leaned into having to be up close to that statue because your brother placed you there. The pictures of the colorful piano keys are also cool. I liked the contrast of all that color against the grey background. My suggestion would be for the first two photos, for exercise 1. I'm not sure if they were edited to be completely black and white or if that was just the way the photo came out. I maybe would have liked to see some color in those photos if they were edited that way.
