Jezzelle: Photographing Light WIP

 Photographing Light

Here are my works in progress

Here, I decided to make the photograph B&W to show the movement of light in the curtains, but I do miss the yellows of the curtains themselves. I question if B&W was the best choice.

Here, I just edited the photo to make the greens and red tones come out a little more.

Edited

For these two, I cropped the image to get rid of the grass from the corner and chose to make the photograph B&W. The contrast between the pavement and the shadows are clearer with B&W.

I thought about making this B&W as well, but after playing with the colors, I thought the contrasts between the black pans and the orange/yellow/tan of the wall looked really good.

While the colors of the original photos look interesting, I decided that they were too distracting. I wanted to focus on how the light made the rain droplets visible on the car window and I felt that with B&W I was able to better show that.

  1. Your first photo I definitely responded to the most. I don't think there was a right or wrong choice in making it B&W or not. Yet, I do like the B&W choice because, like you explained for your last photo, the color distracts from the light as the subject. However, in your last photo I responded to the color version more. The light created interesting colors that enhances the light as the subject more than the B&W version. The photo of the pans, I agree with the decision to not make it B&W and I like how you played with the contrast. It definitely boosts the attention to the light.

  2. I think you did a great job with the originals for all your photos, not to mention some great edits. The third is my favorite. I like how your removed certain parts of the photo that would draw attention away from the shadows and also made the shadows more dramatic. I think your second and fourth photos might look cool if you adjust the hues.

  3. Your photo series is stunning! I'm especially drawn to to your first photo of the curtains. I love the way the light creates a pattern on the curtains, it kind of reminds me of images I've seen of antique-style apartments in Europe. Personally, I am not necessarily a fan of the B&W edited version of it though because I think the color of the curtain creates an interesting mood/setting that I am really drawn to. I understand what you mean by the colors being distracting, but I wonder what your photos would look like with a sepia effect instead of B&W, it would help address your concern without completely removing color from it.

  4. Hi Jezzelle. These are a really great start. Watch your highlights and try to keep them from being too bright or hot. I think that most of these images would be stronger as B&W and I think you should continue to edit them in LR. As you make more images for the finals, I like the idea of photographing at night and what that brings to the content. I would continue to photograph and try to keep your images simple. Good Luck!
