Devitt: Photographing Light

For this edit, I chose to change the tint for the purpose of an underwater concept. Due to the way that the light refracted, it reminded me almost as if we were underwater and changing the tint to look bluer helped me attain that purpose.

For this photo, I wanted to emphasize the color so I upped the green a bit more, added some shadows, downed the white in the light to make sure that the color of the glass ball really came through.

The original picture for this was a bit dull but with some editing, I was really interested in the way the light reflected and refracted not only from the glass ball I was using but also the shadows of the light fixture.

With this version, I'm still very much on the fence. I wasn't so sure on how to edit it but really wanted to keep it as a photo and emphasize the glass rocks because I thought they captured the light interestingly.

With this photo, I first started by cropping out a little bit of side that you could see the rest of the room in. Then I worked with adding some shadow to help clarify and define the star that was refracted light. I changed the tint of this one because I felt like the green tone was rather boring and that the purple made it a bit more fun and interesting.

  1. I love your second edited image of the green bulb. I think you were able to really capture the light well and then were able to edit it to make the details pop. The reflection of the green on the wall also adds dimension to the photograph. While I love the second photo I think the 4th one could have been edited a little bit differently. I think that overexposing the actual light source does bring out the light in the pebbles but it makes the image feel a little over edited. I personally think the unedited 4th photo is more visually pleasing!

  2. I really enjoyed your first edit. I love the underwater concept and I think that you changing the color really worked toward your goal - it reminded me of how light moves when you're in a pool room or when you're underwater so you were really spot on! I agree with the above comment, I also prefer the unedited version of the 4th image. I think that by exposing the light, it took attention away from the glass rocks. The original, I felt, worked with your underwater concept - like an underwater cave or something. Maybe play around with the contrasts and the HSL/Color tab in Lightroom to play with the blues and greens in your image.

  3. Hi Skylar. Quinn had a similar approach to his images and used a strong sense of light as a background. I'm not sure how successful they are as images where light is the subject and to me seem to be more about strange light on a particular object. For example, the last image is and always will be a star and nothing more. I think in the first image the light does alter and change that space and I would encourage you to take that approach with future images. I would also encourage you to use natural light for a few of your images to see how that changes things. I do like the amount of time you are putting into editing and describing your thought process behind it. Good Luck!
