Cece: Photographing light

RED LIGHT/BLUE LIGHT

For this assignment, I was interested in exploring what I could do with artificial light (a blue glow stick and a red light bulb) and how it could interact with a human subject. Had lots of fun with this one, this is what I came up with!

Note: The last two pictures of my shoot didn't turn out as cool as I anticipated :( any suggestions for making the last two more visually interesting?

  1. I love the approach you took to this assignment! Very creative. The photos I responded to the most were your first and third ones. The way you captured not just light, but it's movement is intriguing. For all the photos I took for this assignment the light was always static now that I think about it, and I like how you were able to make the light dynamic.
For your fourth photo I find the unedited version better. I think the color plays an important role in that photo and the edited version lost that color. At least that is the best way I can think of explaining my reasoning. Then for your last photo, I can't provide any advice but I do think you did a good job editing it.

  2. I really like what you did with this assignment overall! I also really appreciate your approach to the editing process, as I can really tell you played with color adjustments and creating some really interesting contrast. Maybe for your last two, you could try looking at the mask from a different angle, rather than straight on and centered. You could try playing around with the rule of thirds and maybe it will help make them a little more visually interesting as you had mentioned.

  3. Hi Cece. I truly enjoy these images, the color and your editing decisions. They are striking and engaging. However, I do question whether the subject matter in the photos is Light. Light is certainly a part of the process and they have an unquestionable illumination to them. But I don't think that the subject is Light. Try to make Light more of the subject, let the light reach out and hit us, make it more active part of the photo and allow it to create deep dark shadows. Good Luck!
