THE PHYSICALITY OF PHOTOGRAPHING
Focus
The theme of my focus photos was forgotten youth. Using the old birdhouses of my brothers and me, I really aimed to capture the decomposition of youth in them.
Upon getting even closer to the birdhouse I think that the worn paint and the nails sticking out created an interesting perspective on youth and growing older.
Distance
For the distance shots, I took photographs of my grandfather's old tractor as I wanted to see it from a new perspective. It has sat in my backyard for a long time now and it is something I have grown accustomed to seeing in a certain angle and changing it was interesting.
The up-close photo of it was my favorite as I liked being able to see where different things might have once been colored. I don't personally remember ever seeing this tractor when it was new, but from looking closer up I believe that the word ford was red and I think the aging of that is really interesting.
Looking Up
When I saw the prompt of looking up I knew trees were what I was interested in. This tree had a really interesting hole in it that had so much texture and I couldn't help but take a photo of it. It was pretty late in the day so the sun truly made the tree look like it was golden.
This photo was taken looking up at a really interesting tree that I personally have always found intriguing. Over the years the tree has become winding, drooping down with limbs going everywhere.
Looking Down
The concept of this photo was pulling on a rope. I climbed up onto the ladder of my old family tree house and took this photo and really worked to emphasize the golden color from being worn and out in nature.
This is a photo taken looking down at the maiden grass within my yard. I think this grass has such an interesting texture to it and really liked how the photo came out.
Crawling
This photograph was taken underneath my kitchen table. The goal of this photo was to emphasize the shine of the chair and the reflection that was caught when using flash.
This photo was taken underneath a table in my basement. I thought this would be an interesting place to take a shot as the cloth on top was really interestingly shaped and the wood is such a rich color.
4 Corners
Top Left
Out of the four corners of perspectives, I think the top left was the picture I liked the most. This picture simply really caught the ambiance of where I found this as well as the texture of the tree behind it.
Top Right
This picture was probably my least favorite of the four corners as the background goes against the dark theme that I wanted to hit home with the shot.
Bottom Right
I liked the idea of this photo as something about being able to see the wheat behind the tree gives it an old western aesthetic to it which I found really interesting.
Bottom Left
This was one of my favorites as well as I really liked how I could truly capture the entire skull within the photograph. In a lot of the others, I couldn't fit the entire horns and I think showing the entire thing is very important.
Close Up
I added this picture simply because I thought it was too cool not to share. I loved the intricate detail of the bones and really wanted to show it off.

I really like your photo series-- the things you chose to photograph seem to tell a story about the environment that you were in and I think thats really cool. You did an excellent job of documenting the space. I can't think of much critique to give except to be mindful of your exposure when you're taking pictures looking up. Both shots of the trees look little blown up, especially the background in the second one. I'd recommend either taking the photo again but this time increase your shutter speed or (I think this is the better option) bring your existing photos into Lightroom and mess around with the exposure, highlights, a whites settings on the program.
ReplyDeleteI really like the photos you've put together for this assignment. I really like your shots of the tractor and birdhouses, showing the aging of objects over time. I would've really liked to see you share an image of the tractor from an even greater distance, showing the tractor and the entire environment surrounding it. I also read what Cece said about the shots of the trees! Sounds like she knows what she is talking about and could help complete your series! Nice work.
